We went to the Safeway we still patronize. For as long as I can remember, the store music has been quiet enough that I'm barely aware of it—although when they have a coded announcement the lady always sounds to me as if she's retching. (I think it's the zeroes. I hear "four – uyulp – uyulp.") Today the noise was loud, loud, loud. Every time we passed under a speaker I couldn't hear what the housemate was saying about what to remind her to get, or lost my train of thought about what I needed to find where they had hidden ... It was on the edge of painful.
