One of the neighboring houses changed hands a few years ago. The new owners are a young family. They took out the cedar hedge outside their side wall and in front of their porch and replaced the latter with bushes of whatever that is with the little trumpet-shaped purple flowers. They took out the lawn and plants at the side of the house and xeriscaped it with lavender. In front of the house they put three little birch saplings, but one didn't make it through its first winter. Today they have a crew in who have ripped out everything in the front and side yard. Maybe they're moving ... But I managed to get one of the trees off the truck, so now I have to see whether I can save its life.
