Something has bitten or stung me on the inside of my left arm - it looks like a wasp sting, in which case I'm glad it stung me, since I react relatively little to those compared to other people. But I didn't see anything.

Sounds more like a spider bite. I get them periodically and NEVER catch it "in the act";>...

Well, those pretty much start immediately post bite. If there's a pustule within 24 hrs, get your fanny to the ER. It's one of the few "Good Things" about spider venom, the effects are noticeable within 24 hrs.
Poison: Pain, Illness, Death. Any or all of the above
Tissue Destroying: Pustule, Weeping, Necrosis, Gangrene.

If nothing much beyond itching happens within 24 hrs and you happen to be in the West(and not in a Poisonous Insect Exhibit at a zoo;>), you'll be OK
