The grass in back is becoming pocked with holes. I assume most are the work of squirrels, although one never knows with this dog.
The mostly white cat likes to perch on the fence on one side of the backyard - I think its home is nearby on that side. I finally captured the cat on the fence, and the cherry tomato plant below (sharing its cage with some self-sown morning glories), but the cat was in the process of coming down for pettins:

Then it proceeded to roll around on the lawn (visible in the rear, the two potted cherry tomatoes, in front of the old brick barbecue hearth):

I eventually came indoors and did some dishes. The cat apparently decided to come on exploratorily into the screen room, because all of a sudden the geriatric, creaky dog exploded past the kitchen table and threw himself down the steps and out into the yard as if he was still young. The cat had already vanished into thin air of course.

One of the neighboring houses changed hands a few years ago. The new owners are a young family. They took out the cedar hedge outside their side wall and in front of their porch and replaced the latter with bushes of whatever that is with the little trumpet-shaped purple flowers. They took out the lawn and plants at the side of the house and xeriscaped it with lavender. In front of the house they put three little birch saplings, but one didn't make it through its first winter. Today they have a crew in who have ripped out everything in the front and side yard. Maybe they're moving ... But I managed to get one of the trees off the truck, so now I have to see whether I can save its life.
