We shopped as usual, stocking up on things like vitamins and cereal and getting my usual breakfast bananas. The bread situation had gone from bad to worse and once more the canned soups were down to Amy's and other expensive brands, plus some highly spiced and split pea varieties. (What's wrong with split pea soup?) Many of the employees seem to have reconciled themselves to their fates and were coming within 2 feet, let alone 6, to advise on food choices and get ready for takeover at the checkouts. No perspex shields at the checkouts yet. The outdoor cafe tables were gone and the coffee shop was closed. For some reason there were no Mountain View Voice copies in the dispenser outside the store; looking at their website, I'm wondering whether they didn't do a print edition this week? But I'm happy to see they've suspended their monthly quota on website views by non-subscribers; the same thing on the San Francisco Chronicle subscription site is giving me hassle-free access to unusually good news articles. I'm afraid I can't afford to subscribe to every news organization in the world.
