I went back to San Francisco and to Ocean Beach again. It was cold, and the beach was quieter than I remember ever seeing it, though some people were playing with very happy dogs. There was an odd half-cloudy light.

As I was finishing my sandwich in the dunes, someone came to patrol in front of me.

The noontime train had been almost empty; returning, I caught the 5:23, which was standing room only until San Carlos. I was in the car with a luggage rack, and when we left town it was stacked with half a dozen folded electric scooters. I hadn't realized so many people were using those. Possibly the inability to provide enough space for all the bikes has something to do with it.
