The potatoes the housemate had not eaten that I put in the ground in the side yard late last summer never grew. Then the fence there blew over onto our side in a wind storm and everything was dug up and trampled by the workmen replacing it. One potato plant proceeded to appear, presumably liking the repeated rain we had this spring, but is now looking woebegone despite daily hose spraying, which has been complicated by the workmen having spread soil across the brick path, so both self-sown and planted nasturtiums are coming back skeined across the path and it's hard for me to get in there. Apparently even more soil was displaced than I thought: since the last late rains, another potato plant has emerged on the wrong side.
