A few years ago, the city allowed Best Buy to construct a large store on El Camino, and the people in the houses behind it were aghast when they realized it had not only a tall illuminated sign on the street side but also big blue and yellow signs at the roofline that shone down into their back yards all night. The city council hadn't realized this would be a problem. Now Best Buy is gone and the store is to be either torn down or adapted. I hope whatever replaces it is a better neighbor.

When I lived in Flagstaff, there was a nifty place we referred to as "the dirt mall," which was a Mallrats reference. It was an old Woolworth's or Woolco store which had been purchased and subdivided into small shop spaces for independent retailers. It was very cool, and I wish more failed big box / department stores would end up that way.

It was really neat. Some of the stuff rotated through as people either moved up to a bigger storefront or failed and closed down. It was sort of a "Mom and Pop Shop" incubator.
