A bag lady came in last night when it was quiet. She left most of her plastic bags outside beside the door, but was clutching a couple and a bungee cord-type leash on the end of which was a small white terrier with an underbite. She wanted a "wine opener", which I took to mean a corkscrew, but of course we don't have them, the liquor store was already closed, and she said she'd already asked at the 7-11. When she turned to go, the dog refused to move. She tried a couple of times to pick it up and it snapped seriously at her. I came around the counter offering to hold the door while she focussed on getting the dog to leave, and the dog came up to me and put its paws on my leg and wagged its tail. The nights are starting to get brisk; I hope the dog had just decided to spend the night where it was warmer.
