This morning we had to drive the dog to a vet clinic that is presumably deliberately located in the middle of back-of-the-highway-intersection nowhere, together with a vet emergency hospital, an animal boarding facility, and a car repair place. The housemate fired up her cellphone driving directions app to be sure. It told us repeatedly it had lost signal—in Silicon Valley—and gave a couple of fairly useless instructions until we were about to turn in, when it suddenly piped up with "Your destination is on the right." She accidentally left it on. On the return trip it had absolutely no signal problems and kept up a constant drum-beat of instructions to make U-turns.
