The modem suddenly clutched its chest and gave up the ghost and the house internet went down for 7 hours until the poor housemate could buy and install a new one. Since the modem lives in the dark depths at the end of my bed, down under a table laden with plants and books, we also have a new hand-held vac to deal with the accumulated dust and detritus.
