Fortunately we've come to the end of the season when it's pretty much necessary to open the back and front doors in the evening to cool off the house; the dog has lost much of his burglar-deterrent value, spending an awful lot of his time curled up asleep in front of one door or another. You have to either fall over him or bang on a hard surface to wake him up; he's deafer than me now. At least he still puts on a fearsome exhibition of jumping and barking when someone attempts to leave by the front door.
