The new lampposts are marching westwards on El Camino, although those at streetcorners are still orange, presumably because of the attached traffic lights. Last night's bus was very crowded and as it trundled along, blinding white flashes under the edge of the open sunroof were intermittently succeeded by a softer orange flash. So I guess they are brighter.

From what I've read, yes, they are brighter, straight down. This at the expense of being dimmer in the periphery. They're already being criticized for the 'blinding white' part of it.

I may be misremembering, but wasn't there talk of removing street lights altogether?

Not that I recall ... Sunnyvale has very few on residential streets, the housemate reckons, probably correctly, to avoid developing a night life. (Also narrow sidewalks on most streets.) But El Camino is supposed to become a "boulevard", which to most of the cities seems to mean a poor imitation of Third Avenue in Manhattan: lots and lots of apartment buildings.
