Where we live is roughly the same distance from two bus stops on El Camino. When I first got assigned to night work, I left early to allow for a bus not coming, and went to the stop that the bus would reach sooner. It's at a major intersection with a shopping center whose name suggests it's "downtown" - even though the anchor store at the time was a charity shop. It's also a stop for the express bus. I was waiting, when a guy walked up to me and solicitously asked whether he could help me out. And the bus sailed past. So ever since, I've used the other bus stop, which is at a slightly less busy corner, but much better lighted at night, and patronized by restaurant staff getting off work. One night last week I missed the bus, so since they have restored some of the express buses at night, I walked back to the express stop. The express came. And it tried to sail past. I had to step into the road waving my pass and yelling - he pulled over halfway to the traffic light and when I got on, mumbled something about always forgetting that was a stop. "So does everyone else," I said.
