I saw last night that I spoke too soon - the rival place has merely put one half of their double storefront up for rent. That's a relief. I was afraid I'd totally eaten their lunch.
I occasionally have problem customers that I would really like to be able to suggest go elsewhere. For example, last night ... and he was at the bus stop when I left work this morning. So I walked on to the next major stop, and checked on the site of the little garden center. The building was leveled last year. I walked over to the tree that flowers in mid-winter, but couldn't determine whether it's made it through the drought and cold. Oddly enough it has large spikes on the trunk and major branches.
Walking back I cut across the concrete where the building had been, and noticed green vines, some with flowers, painted on the old floor.
