This evening Bear broke out of the yard, somehow. I went around the block looking for him but couldn't find him; luckily 2 boys brought him back soon afterwards. When I peered through the gap at the corner where the wire and wooden fences meet, there was a small cat lying there - perhaps the same one that has been leaving circular depressions in the long grass in the fairy garden in that corner - so I don't think he got out that way.
