The ranch house on a corner near us that genuinely looks like a ranch house - side-on to the street with deep porch running the full length of the house, and it used to be a comfortable blue with a ceramic dog on the steps and a black labrador in the back yard that barked at everyone who passed; and their backyard fruit tree is a fig - was suddenly empty and up for sale, repainted a safe pale brown and with almost all the yard plants switched out for small ones that sat in the bark mulch looking shocked. It sold with alacrity and then got termite-tented, but I was a bit happier when I saw the young couple were moving in with the sofa, the bed, and a couple of other necessities piled high on a trailer behind a pick-up truck.
