I have suddenly noticed that people's ring tones are now usually . . . phone rings. Not loud bursts of crackly music, wailing babies, farts, or other cute noises. Telephones ring in the booths when the friend outside wants the friend inside to hurry up and leave. Telephones ring in the bus - the "music" comes from leaky earbuds. New-found austerity? Are people more concerned now about the risk of the wrong kind of noise erupting in a serious meeting? Or did they just get tired of trying to top each other?

I've heard more of the old fashioned ring tones akin to what I grew up hearing. These most often seem to be Blackberrys.

Alas, people are still trying to top each other at my morning job. I hear more terrible music that way.

I've never had anything on my cell but the old style phone ringing tone. If I wanna hear music, I'll listen to the radio.I don't know if it's new found austerity, or people getting "busted" for their obnoxious ring tones, or the fact that downloading the same can get viruses on their phones, especially the smarter phones very easily. Either way, it works for me.
