For some reason, Safeway quick oats boil up bigger than Nob Hill / Raley's quick oats. I have to watch the bowl in the microwave and hit "pause" before it foams up and out.
I'm interested; I quite often make porridge in the microwave. I use ordinary oats, not quick oats, because they're much cheaper and to my mind, less processed. A biggish bowl takes about 3-4 mins depending on the wattage of the microwave. Do you save a lot of time by using quick oats?
Guidance is 1–2 minutes for a one-person serving (½ cup oats); I see the instructions for the packets, which the housemate currently uses, involve the same amount of time. (I used to use the flavoured versions, but it seems silly for unflavoured, and they appear to have added ingredients even in the unflavoured version.) Safeway online shows $3.99 for 12 packets (reduced from $4 ...), $4.50 for the 42 oz tub of "quick oats" that I have (30 servings, reduced from $4.99), and the same exact price and original price for the 42nbsp:oz old-fashioned oats, also 30 servings. I hadn't remembered there being any price difference, but you often have to gyrate to read the shelf label, so I wouldn't have been surprised if there had been a difference like you say you see. There are also 25 oz and 18 oz sizes at a higher cost per serving, and of course name-brand organic steel-cut oats. Some of those might qualify as real porridge, but what I'm eating is just American oatmeal—without even salt, let alone golden syrup. What I add to it these days is raisins. But I think it's a relatively healthy snack. It's interesting that where you are, they charge extra for the real stuff, but Safeway makes no effort to trade on the cachet and both big tubs are really quite cheap. (I looked up a local Safeway, and this area is notorious for high grocery costs.)
Just for a laugh, I looked up Whole Foods own brand 42 oz organic rolled oats / quick oats: top results $9 vs $8.99, and $9.30 for steel-cut.
