Those modern horizontal stockade fences have one advantage I hadn't thought of. The dog was in the front garden at one house, and the kids who live there came back with a gaggle of friends, and instead of opening the gate and risking letting the dog out, they all just clambered over the fence. Whereas of course picket fences specifically discourage climbing over ... I don't think it would have occurred to me as a child to do that, but in any case most people had a privet hedge, with or without a wall in front of it.
