Warmer today, but only Mama Violet showed her face. I think I mentioned that they removed the entire older kids' play section at the park. Even jackhammered out the boulders and cleaned out the sandpit. It's now apparent that they'll be redoing it with sculptured play stuff more appropriate to the park's sea theme. There's a treasure chest already in place and some cute pieces lying around that will presumably be bases for climbing structures. Hope the kids like it and not just the artsy adults; the old stuff was popular.

I miss the old steel-bar rocket ships. You remember those things? I could spend years inside one....

I like playgrounds with a variety of equipment and some of it should be physically challenging for the intended age range. I have seen too many playgrounds that look lovely but sacrifice getting active in favour of a theme.

Kids aged over 8 in my area tend to hang out on the outdoor gym instead, where the equipment is too large for them.

The rocketships weren't exactly adventurous. In many playgrounds I remember, they were the only piece of equipment. Cheaper than swings, easier to maintain than see-saws. Eventually almost entirely disappeared because they were difficult for adults to get into, which made kid emergencies more emergent.
