I should have expected it; in the now vacated house beyond the chainlink fence, all the bushes got cut back (buddleia, a huge briar rose ...) and what was left in the raised beds was cleared out (some shrub, probably sage, two wire structures for tomatoes). But the 4–5 foot ailanthus in the side yard was left alone.
