We have a volunteer toyon by the backyard fence that we decided a few years ago could stay. It's become interwoven with the hugely overgrown plum tree as well as getting quite tall, but it had a big branch reaching out just over the grass, so I lopped off almost all of that and now have a pretty full greenwaste bin and a nice patch of mottled shade where the dog, the cats, and I can footle. The tree has plenty of branches spreading overhead, though I don't like to hurt it.
