I drive. We had Driver's Ed. taught in school, as this was back in the days when public schools were still fully funded, and weren't being drained to death by the school voucher programs.
I passed the tests (both city and expressway driving) when I was 16. Took my expressway test in the middle of a Michigan blizzard. (I scored fine. The kid driving back lost it, and froze-up when the car skidded, causing us to slide down I-475 at a 45-degree angle for about 3/4 of a mile or so. The instructor had to kick his foot off of the brake pedal, and beat his hands off of the steering wheel, to regain control. (This was not a dual control vehicle. I do recall, though, that it was a two-tone brown 1980 Chevy Caprice sedan. The local dealerships took turns contributing brand new cars to the school district, each year, for us kids to learn upon. They were sold, after.)
While taking Driver's Ed, I also drove family cars, with an adult present, on my learner's permit.
I passed the test when I was 25, on the 3rd or 4th try; I failed so many times my instructor took me out of town to Watkins Glen (where they had Formula One races at the time) and I think I also saw money change hands.
I was 16 at my driving test, and passed it the first attempt. I was not able to parallel park during the test, and tried three times. The examiner said to never mind, but learn to parallel park as it's a handy skill. I've never tried to do so since the test, preferring to park in an inconvenient place and walk to my destination.
