The newer calico cat had been getting bolder, or more desperate: she was waiting on the porch for me in the morning and again in the evening rather than hiding under the car or thinking she was invisible on the steps, and when I came out to turn the sprinkler off, she ran away under the overgrown bush beside the steps and stayed there staring at me; I was considering giving her a name. Then yesterday I woke up late since it was the start of my weekend and the housemate didn't wake me, and she hadn't eaten what I put out by the time I went to bed. It was gone by morning but then her morning meal was left untouched all day, and there was no sign of her when I put her evening meal out beside it. But someone had consumed both by late tonight.
