A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a sign in front of the house a couple of doors up: city staff had refused permission for them to fell the huge oak tree in their backyard, and there was to be a public hearing on the appeal. The poor tree has already had everything that extended into our neighbor's airspace lopped off: that's a rented house (the one where the tree is rooted may be too for all I know) and the owner cuts back every growing thing. This afternoon as I was preparing for bed I heard saws and workers were removing two of its huge limbs, but when I got up the tree still stood. I hope they didn't get a reversal of the decision. Poor grandfather or grandmother has watched over this plot for many years, houses all kinds of wildlife, and its shade will be missed when it's too late.
