Friday morning was slow so I was on my laptop at work. When I shut it off, there was an update to Win 7. This laptop goes to sleep and then resumes updating when I open it up at home, so I don't have to worry about it overheating in the bag or draining its battery as I try to get home, as I did with the old one. Good, because the updates take longer and longer. This one took hours, and when I found it turned off and restarted it to be sure it was done, it took at least another hour restarting itself a couple more times and then applying 35,000 changes (!) That was also the night at work when the screen of the work computer was suddenly covered by an apologetic notice about a lengthy update waiting. The work comp was an XP box for years, but that of course died, so now we run Win 10. I decided that a slow night on my shift was the least horrible time to do this. Fortunately there isn't much software on that machine: basically the aptly named POS and a background internet connection for HQ to spy on us and peremptorily send us memos about stuff they've taken it upon themselves to order for the store over the manager's head. But ye gods, that was a huge update. It took at least an hour, and when I was hoping it was done, another apologetic message and yet more percentage countdowns and restarts and then all over again ... I finally had one guy who wanted to buy something with a credit card get cash from the ATM we now have (which fortunately was working; it often isn't, appears to hold only about 10 bills) and charged him using the adding machine, which gave him a few cents' discount since the sales tax percentage never got updated the last time it was changed. The other customer said he'd be back with cash but never returned, so that sale I lost. Once home I ran across someone saying on a Wikipedia talk page that their work comp took three hours, so ... now maybe people will understand why I hate updates????
