I was hacking back those pink flowers yesterday in hopes of avoiding a ticket for blocking the sidewalk and heard a hissing noise like escaping gas. The gas is around the other side of the house. I eventually identified it as a leak at the base of one of the two standpipes for our long unused, no longer functional sprinkler system. The plumber has now been and gone, and it's capped off. The rose bush got a good root-watering, but it didn't get to the point of a river rising and flowing to the gutter, which would have incensed the neighbors. However, there goes any hope of a low water bill despite all the rain.
