There's a relatively new house nearby; five or six years ago, the people moved out of a sleepy-looking mossy-green stucco house on a relatively busy road, and the new owners knocked down everything except the front wall, built a partly two-storey new house behind it and then, whoops, the old facade fell down overnight, so there was nothing for it but to make a swanky new one. They put a white-painted balustrade in front and a sign on the grass verge ordering people not to let their dogs use it as a bathroom. That was so abused it lasted less than a year, but it outlasted their little lawn, which turned to dust and blew away. From the line of shoes on the porch, I imagine they are Asian; from the big new cars usually parked both in front of the house and in the driveway, I imagine in the car business. About a month ago, the yard and driveway became a massive building site. Stone was laid up the driveway and it seems over the backyard too. The balustrade and the hardpack between it and the sidewalk were replaced by new shiny green turf and a border of flowers along the driveway. But no sprinkler system, so I have been wondering how long this grass will last. Maybe longer than expected - someone had shed their flipflops while apparently walking across it to the porch, so they have incentive to keep it alive.
