Yesterday when I left the house a large gold spider was sitting in the center of a web attached to the porch rail directly opposite the door. The markings on its back looked like a hammer to me, but there were two dots in the head of the hammer so I reckoned it might be the infamous death's head and the kind of spider that causes lingering painful death. This morning that web was gone but a similar spider had secured one to the lower branches of one of the bushes in the driveway. Its back markings appeared to be different but it scuttled away as I tried to see them.

Sounds like an Orb Weaver, esp. if it hangs with half it's legs up and half down sharply. We get them here up to the size of a brooch. Scared the crap out of me one day when I walked into one who'd strung it's web from the garden arch and it landed on my chest!

I was thinking that was one of the names dr_nebula had mentioned. Those aren't the nasty poisonous ones are they?

In the cool morning today, it has reappeared, but was feeling friskier and scuttled away into a hanging fuchsia when I went round to look at its back. It was hanging with its back pair of legs up and the rest down, I think.
