The latest Chewy.com delivery of canned catfood vanished somewhere in the Midwest. The local Target that was almost the only place left within walking distance where one could buy stuff suddenly closed because its fireproofing was discovered to be inadequate. (Brand new building built by the chain something like 15 years ago, when the mall was supposed to be redeveloped; they had been the replacement in one of the anchor department stores, I think Monty Ward's.) I spent a good hour looking for pet supply stores that might sell us boxes of Fancy Feast pâté, the rescuer's/feral-feeder's friend, but between the chains all advertising only gourmet brands on their websites and the independents all warning of supply chain problems and making pitches for gourmet food, I decided it had to be another Target. (Every grocery store trip, I eyeball the shelves, and there are always big gaps including all pâté; the best I've been able to do is occasionally score an emergency bulk pack of Friskies, which is the larger cans and not quite so attractive to the cats; that's what I used to run and get at Target.) So we drove to the Cupertino Target. For some reason there were pink hibiscus blossoms strewn in the ivy next to where we parked; that was an omen. Different interior layout from the store I've learned to manage, and even more confusing. Crowded with people—the seasonal rush is underway—very few of them observing social distancing. Quite alarming, so when we finally found the cat food cans, with employee assistance, I basically cleaned them out of boxes I can use. We got home just in time for the housemate to make tea before her phone appointment.
