Road trip to San Jose to get my log-in for the San Jose State Library sorted out—a password reset went into the ether and the library only recently reopened to physical access for non-uni people. The librarian was immensely helpful; I will be able to get university books brought down to me from the forbidden precincts and check them out, but I should prepare a list and we need to budget a long visit to allow for them being found.

It's been well over a year since we last made that drive (lots of yellow fall foliage; IIRC the last time, the trees were just starting to turn), and the traffic was sickening, only in small part due to road work. Although there was less crazy San Jose driving than I expected.

Andy's Pet Shop, which was originally on a lovely walkable stretch of The Alameda and whose neon sign with macaw is fondly remembered (the location is now a bike shop but has kept the mural as of the last Street View), has given up on the whizz-past-on-the-way-to-the-onramp location on the edge of downtown (note main part of the neon sign propped against the window and macaw on the sidewalk chalkboard) that they moved to in 2010. I was sad when I saw that up for lease. But apparently they moved over the summer to South Bascom Ave (Murky News coverage). Hopefully there they'll get, if not foot traffic, at least traffic willing and able to stop. It's an old-style independent pet supply store and used to have surrendered/rescued animals for adoption.
