I was out in the daytime and realized one of the reasons for all the power-tool noises; a nearby house, built only in the 1970s or 1980s and foreclosed on in the 2008 crash, has now been taken down to the studs inside; in daylight, I can see through a tear in the paper that's been put up inside the front window. It was already extensively remodeled, with the porch ripped off (after which successive residents tried various solutions for sheltering the door from the rainy-season deluge), an electric car charger put in, the garage replaced by a new structure including laundry facilities, and repainted different colors, and the front yard has undergone more reworkings still; I don't see a city planning request, so presumably it's not going to become a monster house, just an utterly wasteful replacement of every room and fitting.
