I went out to put jeans on the line and there was bright sunlight on that side of the yard; the family have moved out of the house and the old closet doors that were zip-tied to the chainlink fence have been removed. Their landlord put them there to minimise dog confrontations and apparently decided they'd served their purpose. I looked down to see whether any bits had come off during the removal, and two amber eyes looked back at me from behind a geranium pot. Monty has risked coming back to his old snoozing spot.
