The first trees have a little flush of autumn color starting. I've noticed this before and wondered about it. I suppose it could be stress from the long, hot summers in trees that didn't evolve in this climate. Liquidambars/sweetgums in particular seem to "fire" at different times, some starting very early.
We went to the San Jose library (where I picked up a copy of Wikipedia's greatest rival, the Onion Book of Known Knowledge). On the way the freeway was strewn on both sides with clothing. I hope it was a burst plastic bag or two from one of those charities that collects used garments, and not some poor person moving house.
