Some narcissi have appeared in gardens. Not many people grow daffs around here, so I probably missed their first appearance. But I note that my amaryllis have new foliage, too.
The store is suddenly festooned with hearts of all sizes. One of them suddenly fell off the door at my feet. A fringed garland above a display case rattles when the heating comes on. And a string of foil hearts next to the cash register twists in the wind and reflects the fluorescent lights back at me so I think someone set off a flash grenade in the parking lot and it showed on the video monitor. I do not think I have the equanimity for this holiday.
The rain started up again last night, a light misting as I took Bear out while still in my nightie and barefoot. It was steady when the housemate drove me to work. All last night traffic was light and the lights of El Camino glistened in puddles in the parking lot. When I finally got to go home - late, again - the bench at the bus stop was covered in droplets, but there wasn't enough rain for me to get out my umbrella. Just a pervasive dampness. When we planned to walk the dogs, however, it was hammering on the roof of the screen room. So we delayed, and the sun was peeping out when we left the house. Of course, a quarter of the way through the walk, the heavens opened again. It's been so dry, my glasses were dusty. Now they are washed and wiped. And my bed is damp from hairy Bear.
