Letting the dog out this evening, I had to put the light on in the back porch because he was transfixed by something in the corner by the door to the garage. It turned out to be a juvenile possum, maybe 4½ inches long not including the tail, and of course curled up looking dead. He had already worried it out of the corner. So I got a paper towel, lifted it by the tail, and evicted it through the gate into the side yard, where I laid it on the path to pursue its destiny.
Update: Silly little thing snuck back in under the gate; the neighbor dogs were barking their heads off at the fence on the other side of the yard and the dog was snuffling away at the possum. I hauled him in.
