I walked by the rail line today. The fig tree hedge is shedding green fruits all over the pavement/sidewalk. No idea how one might go about eating them.
Unfortunately figs don't ripen off the tree. It's normal for the tree to discard some green, unripe fruit if the weather is too dry or if the fig tree does not have enough energy to develop all its fruit. You can make jam out of the green discards but apparently it requires a lot of boiling to remove the bitter sap.
Wait till you see larger, discarded fruit that have a purple blush and yield a little to the touch. A fig is ready to pluck from the tree when the fruit no longer hangs straight out from the tree on its stem; instead the stem dips a little and the fig hangs downwards.
I was afraid of that. I didn't have the nerve to scrump any last year, although the tree (I'm conservatively assuming only one) forms a massive hedge thrusting itself into one's face as one walks by, so I could plausibly say I accidentally knocked fruits off from swaying in my decrepitude.
