Much the same used to be my situation, but I've become both better and worse in recent years, I think: at my last job I was required to have the radio on, so I got better at ignoring the singing, but for writing, I suspect I've lost the ability I had in school to work to classical music. In New York I had some particularly undemanding CDs—Bach organ works, film and TV theme tunes—that I could use to write to, but I found the classical radio station was too likely to throw up something I had to listen to.
Only if I like the music; otherwise it's extremely distracting.
I don't tend to listen to music whilst working though as I can't concentrate on both at the same time. The music tends to fade out of my consciousness so I'm only aware of it intermittently.
